February Gardening Chores

The month of February is also the month of love and Valentine’s day… so I thought this picture on the left would do nicely!!! Unbelievable…. We have had a dusting of snow here in the Netherlands and the temperature has dropped into freezing figures. Hopefully we will still be able to get our skates out and have a week of skating fun. Most Dutch people can skate really well and will venture out with the whole family at the weekends. Tennis courts get flooded and organizers get really very excited about preparing the ice rinks....

January Gardening chores

First of all I would like to start by wishing everybody a very happy, healthy, successful and green 2012!!! December here in Holland has been the warmest on record, with temperatures above 10C … confusing birds, plants and humans all together! It should be -2,-4 or even -10C I even have my first new rosebud nearly opening on the south facing wall … will take photo to prove it! and my rosemary has also started to flower again!!! photo to follow too!!! So if the plants are confused so must I then… tempted to start clearing the...

December Gardening Chores

For me it does not really feel like December… November has been an extremely gentle month weather wise. We have had less rain than during our summer and the temperature has been high compared to other Novembers. I have glided gently into December unaware of it possible harshness… noticing only the  bareness of the trees and heaps of raked leaves my fellow local gardeners are leaving behind on the local autumn compost heap. Only a couple of days ago my gardener turned up with his noisy leaf-blower to turn my fallen leaves into...

November Gardening Chores

It is November already and here in Holland it hardly feels like it as the temperature is high for the time of the year. I do not mind actually as I love watching the season changing slowly into deep autumn with beautiful clear blue skies with the odd spectacular cloud show. Leaves are changing from bright yellow and red to browns, letting go when it’s their time to fall to the ground and become part of earths cycle! Always totally fascinating I find how life in nature goes it’s own sweet way and carries it’s own beauties...

October Gardening Chores

Yesterday was the first day of October and here in Holland a beautiful hot day…. apparently the hottest ever!!!! I remember writing last month that we had had the wettest summer since 1906 and now another extreme weather forecast! Amazing how the climate is completely off balance. Surely we must all be noticing the climate change worldwide. Anyway we just have to adapt and take extra care of our planet, earth, continent, country, county, city, village, landscape, nature, garden and balconies! So come on out and start digging around your...

September Gardening Chores

It is September and officially still summer…. although in my part of the world, Northern Europe, it certainly feels more like Autumn. Here in the Netherlands we have had the wettest summer since 1906 which means that our gardens have suffered badly from extreme heavy rainfall, strong winds and storms. I have frequently stood geared up and ready to tackle the garden weeds etc. but have had to dash back in because of sudden terrential down poor. Having to leave the garden rather sadder looking than usual. Apparently this upcoming weekend...
